Nature: There's plenty to do during your visit to the gorges. But no matter what you choose, be sure to bring your camera! The unusually moist climate results in a diverse selection of flora and fauna, including several rare species of ferns and vascular plants with unique "pitchers" that allow them to catch rain. During March and April, you may get to see the delicate white blossoms of an Oconee Bell, which can only be found in seven counties along the borders of the Carolinas and Georgia.
The gorges also serve as a haven for a variety of endangered animals, ranging from peregrine falcons to Appalachian
cottontails. If you are patient, and still enough, you may be able to photograph a white-tailed deer peacefully grazing nearby - or even capture your first meeting with a black bear. So be sure to bring along plenty of film to preserve all the memories!
