The South Carolina Botanical Garden is located just a few blocks from downtown Clemson, but this enticing haven seems to be miles and miles away from the distractions of modern-day life.

Listen - water gurgling through rock-lined brooks; birds singing in the trees; leaves rustling in the wind. This symphony of nature in complemented by a tantalizing display of color throughout the year. The camellia collection brightens the winter landscape; the dazzling display of woodland wildflowers, azaleas, and daffodils ushers in spring; the newest varieties of annuals and perennials provide sizzling colors in the lazy summer sun; and the leaves and chrysanthemums blaze their way through the fall.

Established in 1958 when a small parcel of land was set aside to preserve a camellia collection, the Botanical Garden has evolved into one of South Carolina's premier attractions. Covering 270 acres, the garden features an amazing selection of camellias, hostas, and daffodils; a meadow full of wildflowers which attract butterflies and hummingbirds; a dwarf conifer collection; and an arboretum containing more than 1,000 trees and shrubs.

The Botanical Garden also serves as an outdoor classroom, offering you the opportunity to learn tips and techniques which can be incorporated into your home garden or landscape plans. The Home Horticulture Demonstration Garden teaches environmentally-friendly and effective methods of pest control, as well as touting the many positive benefits of composting. In addition, the Xeriscape, or "dry landscape," Garden promotes techniques which can reduce water use by up to 80 percent while still achieving a lush, green landscape. The benefits of gardening can be learned in the Therapeutic Horticulture Garden, which is equipped to accommodate wheelchairs. Finally, the Botanical Garden also offers insight into the past with several historic buildings located on the grounds.

Visitors are welcome from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year, free of charge.
